Start with your budget.

Your income affects the legal borrowing limit, but the limit is not a promise of approval or a recommendation to borrow that amount.

When a bill arrives unexpectedly, it is tempting to ask only, “How much can I get?” A more useful question is, “What can I repay without missing rent, food or an existing instalment?” This guide separates the legal ceiling from a practical repayment budget.

Unsecured borrowing limits in Singapore

The following limits apply across all licensed moneylenders combined, rather than separately at each lender. They are based on the Registry of Moneylenders’ borrower guidance.

Maximum unsecured borrowing across licensed moneylenders

Below S$10,000S$3,000S$500
S$10,000 to below S$20,000S$3,000S$3,000
S$20,000 or more6 times monthly income6 times monthly income

Existing borrowing matters. For example, a person earning S$3,000 a month may fall within an S$18,000 ceiling. That does not mean they can take another S$18,000 from each lender. The amount available still depends on existing borrowing, verification and the lender’s assessment.

Work out a repayment you can manage

Write down the income you can reliably use each month. Subtract essential spending, current repayments and a reserve for irregular expenses. Avoid building a repayment plan around a bonus, overtime or sale that has not happened.

A simple monthly budget example

Take-home income: S$3,200
Essential expenses: − S$2,100
Existing debt repayments: − S$500
Reserve for irregular costs: − S$250
Amount left: S$350

In this illustration, a new S$400 instalment would exceed the available S$350. A lender offering the loan would not make that repayment affordable. These figures illustrate a method, not a recommended borrowing amount.

What affects a loan assessment?

  • Income and stability: whether the income is regular and can be supported with current records.
  • Existing commitments: other repayments and essential household costs.
  • Supporting information: identification, employment or income records and any further documents requested.
  • Repayment history and current circumstances: assessed together, rather than treating a single salary figure as automatic approval.

For the application process, see our personal loan information. If you are already struggling to repay, contact your current lender early before taking on another commitment.

Compare the full cost, not just the instalment

Ask for the amount you will receive after fees, the repayment dates, the interest calculation and the total payable if you pay on time. Then compare offers using the same amount and repayment period. A smaller monthly payment over a longer period can still cost more overall.

Write down these five figures before deciding: principal, cash received, total scheduled repayments, number of instalments and each due date. Ask the lender to explain anything that does not reconcile.

Questions borrowers often ask

Does meeting the income band guarantee approval?

No. The legal ceiling and the lender’s assessment serve different purposes. Approval and the offered amount remain subject to checks.

Should I borrow the maximum offered?

Start with the actual expense and your repayment budget. Borrowing extra “just in case” adds a commitment you may not need.

Can I make an online enquiry?

Yes, you can enquire online. Loan completion requires the appropriate verification, including an in-person meeting at the licensed premises. An online enquiry is not a loan approval.

Prepare before you enquire

Bring a clear view of your monthly commitments and ask for the document checklist that applies to you.
